There is more money lost in chasing yield than at gun point. – Ray Devoe
How true this statement is. A common investor behaviour, however much so it may hurt, widely on display and in action – chase maximum returns, the highest yields.
Isn’t that what you do too? or not?
When it comes to money and investment decisions, the chemical reactions inside our brain work very differently. They push us to make decisions that we would never advise anyone to do.
- Random transactions in to buy insurance policies, exotic products and hot stocks
- Keep chasing funds with highest star ratings and rankings
- Accept random advice from TV experts, blogs, books, magazines or friends/cousins/colleagues
And we keep doing this happily until the day when reality strikes. Your portfolio appears out of shape, bloated and diseased. You wonder what a royal mistake you made.
There is too much at stake, for you, with this random approach. Sometimes, it can be too late.
Every such yield chasing decision loses you money and pushes back your financial freedom by a few years.
Do a few such actions and you mortgage your entire living period as a slave for money.
Your dreams of ‘not working for money anymore‘, “control over my time”, ‘start something on my own‘ and even ‘living life on my own terms‘ may remain just that…dreams.
If this has not shaken you up and then what will?
If this has not forced you to ask the following questions, what will?
#1 How can I stop taking random decisions and have a more structured approach to my investments?
#2 How can prepare my mind to ask better questions to evaluate what is right for my money?
#3 How can I claim my financial freedom, my time for myself?
If you are asking these questions, you may want to read further too.
Putting two and two together
As an Investment Adviser, I have worked with hundreds of individuals over the past several years.
I am astonished to see that these otherwise well-meaning, smart people. On the one hand they make great progress with their careers, on the other hand, they have a shallow approach to money and investments. Even they are not immune to the ‘yield chasing’ behaviour.
As I thought through this, the one big reason I identified was that we are actually never prepared to deal with “money”. All our emotions and actions related to money are driven by what we see around, what is peddled by headline seeking media and the commission chasing bankers who never fail to paint a rosy picture of the future.
Then the ticker of the stock market keeps us busy on a moment to moment basis and we just fail to come out of that addiction. We fail to take it account the real things, the important things, the things that matter to make money compound over years and build wealth. We forget what is risk because we never talk about it meaningfully.
Unfortunately, our education, which fails to prepare us for even jobs, cannot be expected to prepare us to handle money or investing.
No one trains us what to do after the “income” is in. The lack of training leaves the money free to go anywhere, mostly to the point of no return.
This is really heartbreaking.
If you are in your 30s or 40s, you are looking at another 40 to 50 years of investment decisions. But how ready are you?

As you would know, I also offer personalised investment advisory service and here’s what my client, Nakul Gupta who is a Sales Director, South Asia – GE Aviation, Singapore, says:
I first got acquainted with Vipin over a decade ago when he was a part of the financial advisory firm I had enlisted for my personal finances. I am privileged to have him as my Financial Advisor and in many ways, my life coach!
Vipin’s greatest strengths are in-depth research and communication skills. Being a voracious reader and natural networker, he has a vast body of knowledge to draw upon while proposing financial solutions to meet one’s goals. He particularly endeared to me due to his simple demeanour and “genuine” intent to help rather than pursue any selfish vested interest.
When he makes recommendations, they are never based on gut feel, rather are data backed and emerge as the outcome of weighing pros and cons of several potential options.
As is evident from his blog, his writings are easy on the eye and stimulating for the brain. He is equally lucid in verbal prose. He explains his thoughts in a simple, straight-forward manner that is easy to comprehend.
In the past few weeks itself, he has helped me make subtle changes to my portfolio (including loans, insurance, mutual funds, debt funds and real estate) to yield significant benefits in the short and long term. Further, he has enlightened me on many new books, apps, etc not just in the financial domain. Thank you Vipin for becoming a precious partner in my success!
As you realise, you receive immense value with Money Master. In fact, the full current fee of Rs. 14,000 for the course is an investment worth making.
I look forward to working with you to transform your relationship with your money.
